History

Following the establishment of independence, President Nursultan Nazarbayev called for the creation of a comprehensive system for the early identification and enriched education of talented youth. With this purpose in mind, the Intellectual Schools network – a flagship educational programme – was launched by the President on 12 March 2008. The Intellectual Schools have a natural and mathematical sciences orientation and are intended to serve the gifted and talented children of Kazakhstan.
President Nazarbayev envisages that the Intellectual Schools will help to build the intellectual capacity of the nation. Graduates of the Intellectual Schools are expected to contribute to the prosperity and competitiveness of Kazakhstan.
The Intellectual Schools are also intended to act as a motor for reforming the education system in general. Therefore, the Intellectual Schools project is an important social, political and economic initiative. To meet the challenge set by President Nazarbayev, the Intellectual Schools must develop an innovative education model that integrates best Kazakhstani and international practices. Graduates of these schools are to successfully complete studies at Nazarbayev University and at other prestigious national and international universities. As they enter the labour market, Intellectual Schools graduates are expected to be lifelong learners who co-operate and innovate in order to build the economic, political and social fabric of the nation.
Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Chemistry and Biology in Ust-Kamenogorsk was founded on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the framework of “20 Intellectual Schools” state program and began operating on September 13, 2010. The School is called on to promote “lifelong learning” – a credo that President Nazarbayev has repeatedly stated should belong to every Kazakh national.
